2 Lives—2 Results!

~ Gods Holy Word Changes Lives! ~

First Life  ~  He entered Yale College at age 13 and graduated with honors. He became a pastor, and his sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God,” started the Great Awakening, a revival that swept America, uniting the colonies prior to the Revolution.  He became President of Princeton College. His name was Jonathan Edwards, born October 5, 1703, and he married Sarah Pierrepont.

First Results  ~  According to “A Study in Education and Heredity” by A.E. Winship (1900), their descendants included: 1 U.S. Vice-President, 3 U.S. Senators, 3 governors, 3 mayors, 13 college presidents, 30 judges, 65 professors, 80 public office holders, 100 lawyers, and 100 missionaries.

Second Life  ~  This same study examined a family known as “Jukes.” In 1877, after visiting New York's prisons, Richard Dugdale found inmates with 42 different last names all descended from one man, called “Max,” born 1720 of Dutch stock. Max was idle, ignorant and vulgar.

Second Results  ~  His descendants included only 20 with a trade, 310 paupers, who, combined spent 2,300 years in poorhouses, 50 women of debauchery, 400 physically wrecked by indulgent living, 7 murderers, 60 thieves, and 130 other convicts.

The “Jukes” cost the state more than $1,250,000.

“So shall my Word be that goes forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11).

2 Epitaphs

~ Regrets or No Regrets?  ~

First Epitaph  ~  In 1860 during his final moments, an infidel named Wilmot laid his emaciated hand on the Bible and solemnly said, “I see now that the only objection to this book is my bad life.”

Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord. And again, ‘The Lord will judge His people.’ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:28-31)

Second Epitaph  ~  In contrast to Wilmot were the last words of Charles Wesley ten years later. “I shall be satisfied with Thy likeness; satisfied—satisfied!”

These all died in faith [the previous list of individuals who lived a life of faith in God], not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them” (Hebrews 11:13-16).

bottom line  ~  Living without God means dying without hope!

Christ—Jehovah, 8of9

~ The Title “Jehovah-Shammah” ~

Jesus said, “I and My Father are one” (John 10:30).

There are quite a number of Jehovah titles.  This series will focus on seven Jehovah titles which embrace the fullness of Jesus Christ for His people.  These titles include the completeness of Jehovah’s name as it is manifested in the life of Jesus Christ for His people.  These titles show how the Messiah completely meets His people’s need from their guilt to their future glory.

Jehovah-Shammah means “the Lord is there,” which was a Hebrew way of stating the abiding presence of God with His people.

The book of Ezekiel concludes with a high note by reminding the Israelites of the abiding presence of God with His people.  “All the way around shall be eighteen thousand cubits; and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE” (Ezekiel 48:35).

Application  ~  Our Lord and Savior desires fellowship with His children.  He wants His redeemed to walk with Him constantly, to converse with Him, to seek His advice, and to obey Him.

Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.  If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.  If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.  By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciple” (John 15:5-8).  The word “abide” implies dwelling with or living with—not just visiting from time to time.  Christians are to be walking with Christ twenty-four, seven, three-sixty-five.

the key question: “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). This is the most important question you will ever answer. If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!

Messiah, 144

~ Messiah’s Delight Would Be In the Fear of The Lord ~

“Search the Scriptures—they testify of Me.”
— Jesus Christ (John 5:39)

The Scripture
There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.  The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.  His delight is in the fear of the Lord” (Isaiah 11:1-3a).

The Messiah
Jesus said, For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me” (John 6:38).
Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, ‘O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done’” (Matthew 26:42).
“Then I said, 'Behold, I have come—in the volume of the book it is written of Me—to do Your will, O God.’  Previously saying, ‘Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them’ (which are offered according to the law), then He said, ‘Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.’  He takes away the first that He may establish the second” (Hebrews 10:7-9).

~~~ EXPLANATORY “MESSIAH” NOTES ~~~
(1)  Each Saturday ALN posts an example of a Hebrew Scriptures prophecy (or foreshadowing) related to the coming Messiah which was fulfilled in the birth, life, death, or resurrection of Jesus Christ.
(2)  While extensive it will not be a complete list—there are hundreds of prophecies of the coming Messiah which have been fulfilled by one man—Jesus Christ at His First Coming.
(3)  It is important that there are many more prophecies of the Messiah, yet unfulfilled, which Christians believe will be fulfilled at the time of His Second Coming.  A particularly relevant Scripture verse in this regard is: “Do not despise prophesies” (1 Thessalonians 5:20).
(4)  These posts will typically consist only of Scripture—which speaks for itself.  Sometimes italicized or bold font will be used by ALN for emphasis.
(5)  The numbering of these fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah is used to differentiate individual posts. It is not chronological (either by time of the prophecy or by sequence in the life of the Messiah).  The posting sequence will, for the most part, be in the order that the prophecies appear in Scripture.
(6)  Because of the chosen methodology (#5 above) we will find many specific prophecies repeated multiple times throughout the Scriptures.
(7)  These serial posts are in addition to our regular Tuesday ALN postings on random topics.
(8)  Subscription to ABUNDANT LIFE NOW blog is simple—just use the link on the left sidebar.  Once subscribed you will not miss future posts.
