Trios of Evil, 4of6

~ Children of Israel – Rebellious Angels – Cities of Sodom & Gomorrah ~

In the Book of Jude we find three apostate groups (identified in this post) and three apostate individuals (identified in the next post).

Key Scripture ~ “Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.  For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ” (Jude 3-4).  This is the lead in paragraph to the following verses.

Children of Israel ~ “But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe” (Jude 5).  Do not presume on past mercy and grace from your Savior.  The warning is that past spirituality does not substitute for current reality.  In essence your Christianity needs to be part of current events and not just past history.  How are you doing?

Rebellious Angels ~ “And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day” (Jude 6).  The angels gave up their dignity!  Christian, do you realize all the benefits of your spiritual birthright?  Are you living in the victory and joy of your position as an adopted child of the Creator?

Cities of Sodom & Gomorrah ~ “As Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire” (Jude 7).  The evil here is misuse of God-given sexuality.  Improper sexual lust and behavior is a major characteristic of most of today’s cultures—especially the more “sophisticated open-minded” societies.  God’s righteousness and His standards have not changed.  How are you doing?  Are you able to keep your actions (and thoughts) pure in God’s sight?

Additional Comment ~ Peter in his second epistle mentions a somewhat similar trio of God’s judgment: the condemnation of fallen angels, the great flood of Noah’s day, and Sodom & Gomorrah.

Identity in Christ, 17

~ I Am One Assured of an Eternal Home ~

Introduction  ~  When Christians understand the various characteristics and aspects of the birthright which came with their second birth, they comprehend their identity in Christ.  Once Christians understand their identity, their destiny is also clear!  This series of “Abundant Life Now” posts will look at one of those facets each week.

This Week’s Verse  ~  “Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:1-2).

Comment  ~  The word “hope” (used in many translations of the Bible) has a vastly different meaning than what is in common usage today.  It refers to a sure thing (a settled thing), and is used primarily in reference to the Christian’s possession of eternal life.  This life will be in heaven with God and therefore this verse (and many others) couples “hope” with the “glory of God.”

~~~ EXPLANATORY “IDENTITY IN CHRIST” NOTES ~~~
(1)  Each Monday ALN posts an example of Scripture’s description of aspects/characteristics of Christians—those who have personally trusted in Jesus Christ, The Messiah, as their personal Savior.
(2)  This series is not intended to be an exhaustive list.
(3)  God the Father described Himself to Moses as the great “I AM” (Exodus 3:14).  God the Son also said “I AM” (John 8:58).
(4)  Jesus Christ is the Son of God and several times in the Gospel of John He refers to Himself as “I am.  I am the Bread of Life” (6:35-51), “I am the Light of the World” (8:12, 9:5), “I am the Door” (10:7-9), “I am the Good Shepherd” (10:11-14), “I am the Son of God” (10:36), “I am the Resurrection and the Life” (11:25), “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (14:6), “I am in the Father, and the Father in Me … Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me” (John 14:10-11), and “I am the True Vine” (15:1-5).
(5)  Individual Christians are also sons and daughters of God.  This series will show some of the various “I am” aspects of a Christian.
Christ’s Authority, 2of2
~ The Authority of Jesus Christ Delegated! ~
Authority Delegated to His Disciples  ~  “And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease” (Matthew 10:1).
After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go.   And heal the sick there, and say to them, “The kingdom of God has come near to you.”’    Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.’     ‘Behold, I [Jesus] give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you’” (Luke 10:1, 9, 17, 19).
the key question: “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). This is the most important question you will ever answer. If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!
