Christ in Titus

~ Jesus Christ Is Our Faithful Pastor ~

The Bible is about Jesus Christ  ~  “Jesus said to them, ‘How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!  Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?’  And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself” (Luke 24:25-27).

Jesus Christ in the Book of Titus  ~  He is our Faithful Pastor, the One who appoints leaders in the Church, our mediator, and our Coming Savior (“our blessed hope”).  In this short letter we are positioned between the first coming of Jesus Christ and His second coming.  The first is history and we are subsequently living in the Day of Grace.  His second coming is fast approaching and will fulfill all remaining prophecies. 

Comment  ~  We have only touched the surface of Christ in the book of Titus.  The Apostle Paul told us the Scriptures present many shadows of things to come but the reality is found in Jesus Christ (Colossians 2:17).

~ Popularity At All Cost ~      

Introduction  ~  Satan is the “Father of lies” (John 8:44).  From the beginning—in the Garden of Eden—Satan has tried to get humans to doubt, question, and deny the truth of God’s Word.  In essence Satan whispered in Eve’s ear, “Did God really say that?” (Genesis 3:1).  This is a serious matter because God will not always strive with an individual.  “Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever” (Romans 1:24-25).

Satan Says  ~  Your identity as a Christian is based on how others see you. 

God’s Answer  ~  Your identity is how God sees you in light of the finished work of Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary. 

“And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’  Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ” (Galatians 4:6-7). 

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.  For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.  Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified” (Romans 8:28-30).

“In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory” (Ephesians 1:11-12).

Comment  ~  Popularity and reputation are important.  However, your integrity is many times more important—it’s what counts in God’s eyes.  (Reputation is what others think you are whereas integrity is what you really are.)

~ Unity Marks Those Who Fear God ~

God does not want His children living in fear.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3).  However, God does want His children to have a proper respect and reverence for Him.  We are told in many places in Scripture to “fear God.”  

This Week’s Passage  ~  “Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name.  I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Your name forevermore.  For great is Your mercy toward me, and You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol” (Psalm 86:11-13). 

Fearing God Results in Salvation  ~  “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).  “A wise person fears and departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident” (Proverbs 14:16).  This does not mean the Christian is to live a fearful life—but a life which reverences God and seeks to do His will. 

Fearing God Results in Fearlessness  ~  “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).  The answer is: only God.  With the gift of salvation comes responsibility.

Fearing God Results in Witnessing  ~  “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul” (Psalm 66:16).
