Learn From Gideon, 11

~ God Goes With His People Into Battle, 2 ~

The Biblical account of the life of Gideon provides for one of the most interesting character studies in all of Scripture.  In this series we will discover practical lessons for living the Christian life today.  

Scripture  ~  “And the Lord said to Gideon, ‘Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man’” (Judges 6:16).

Learn From Gideon  ~  You and God are a majority! 

1. God accompanies His people on any mission He gives them.
2. God sees Gideon as he will be—not as he is.  
3. These first two principles are alive and well today.  Jesus told His disciples, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.  Amen” (Matthew 28:19-20). 
4. In this particular situation God even assures Gideon of victory!

concluding comment  ~  We learn about Gideon primarily from Judges 6-8, but also Isaiah 9:1-7, and Hebrews 11:1-3, 32-34.

10 Commandments Today, 2of14

~ There Is Only One True God! ~

Key Passage  ~    Jesus said, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.  I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17).

Old Testament Command (#1)  ~  “And God spoke all these words, saying:  ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:1-3). 

“And Moses called all Israel, and said to them: ‘Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be careful to observe them.  The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.  The Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who are here today, all of us who are alive.  The Lord talked with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire.  I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord; for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up the mountain. He said: ‘I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  You shall have no other gods before Me’” (Deuteronomy 5:1-7).

New Testament Responsibility  ~  “Again, the devil took Jesus up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.  And he said to Him, ‘All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.’  Then Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan!  For it is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.”’  Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him” (Matthew 4:8-11).

Additional Passage  ~  “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’  On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 22:37-40).

Comment  ~  There is only one Creator—the only true God (manifest in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  But mankind’s sin nature causes movement towards worshipping the creation rather than the Creator! 

Listen to the words of Jesus Christ in the historical account of the Samaritan woman at the well.  “Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father.  You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.  But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.  God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.’  The woman said to Him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming’ (who is called Christ).  ‘When He comes, He will tell us all things.’  Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you am He’” (John 4:21-26).

~ Forgiving Is An Expression of Love ~

Series Scripture  ~  Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.  This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.  You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.  No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.  You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.  These things I command you, that you love one another” (John 15:11-17).

Post Scriptures  ~  Jesus Christ instructs us to be forgiving regarding the offenses of others. 

“Then He said to the disciples, ‘It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come!  It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.  Take heed to yourselves.  If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.  And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, “I repent,” you shall forgive him’” (Luke 17:1-4).  

“As the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.  But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection” (Colossians 3:12-14).

Additional Comment  ~  A lack of forgiveness shows a lack of understanding of the Cross of Jesus Christ.  A lack of forgiveness denies the power of the Cross.
