~ Jesus Christ Came To Be Our High Priest ~

Passage  ~  “Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.  For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted” (Hebrews 2:17-18).

Significance  ~  Prophets speak to the people with messages from God.  Priests, on the other hand, speak to God on behalf of people.  Jesus Christ is our great, merciful, faithful High Priest. 

Comment  ~  The work of salvation was completed on the Cross of Calvary.  “It is finished!” (John 19:30).  However, Christ continues to be our advocate (attorney) to God, the righteous Judge, on our behalf. 

“What then shall we say to these things?  If God is for us, who can be against us?  He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?  Who shall bring a charge against God's elect?  It is God who justifies.  Who is he who condemns?  It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?  Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” (Romans 8:31-36).

The Spirit of God is also continuously at work on our behalf.  “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses.  For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God” (Romans 8:26-27). 

the key question:  “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15).  This is the most important question you will ever answer.  If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!

Myth, 6

~ The “Guilt Is Bad” Myth ~

Introduction  ~  Guilt can be good or bad.  There exists two very different kinds of guilt.  Genuine guilt can be very useful and cause meaningful and intentional change.  On the other hand false guilt is often destructive.

Genuine guilt:  True guilt is based on realizing we have fallen short of God’s standards and expectations for us.

False guilt:  Worldly guilt is based on peer pressure or societies norms and expectations. 

Key Passage  ~  “Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing.  For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.  For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication!  In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter” (2 Corinthians 7:9-11).

Results  ~  The results of these two kinds of guilt are significantly different. 

False guilt:  False guilt (worldly regret) sometimes produces temporary change—sometimes worthwhile change.  However, it is self-focused typically based on wanting to feel better about ourselves. 

Genuine guilt:  True guilt (Godly sorrow) usually causes a focus on correcting our lifestyle choices—many times permanently.

Fear God, 131

~ The Fear of God Establishes Hope ~

God does not want His children living in fear.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3).  However, God does want His children to have a proper respect and reverence for Him.  We are told in many places in Scripture to “fear God.”  

This Week’s Passage  ~  “Do not let your heart envy sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day; for surely there is a hereafter, and your hope will not be cut off” (Proverbs 23:17-18).

Fearing God Results in Salvation  ~  “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).  “A wise person fears and departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident” (Proverbs 14:16).  This does not mean the Christian is to live a fearful life—but a life which reverences God and seeks to do His will. 

Fearing God Results in Fearlessness  ~  “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).  The answer is: only God.  With the gift of salvation comes responsibility.

Fearing God Results in Witnessing  ~  “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul” (Psalm 66:16).
