Cross Words, 4of9

~ Words For His Mother & John of Compassion & Provision ~

Jesus Christ made seven gripping last statements while He was dying for our sins on the Cross of Calvary.  This is part of a Sunday series looking at the last words of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Passage (phrase 3)  ~  Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.  When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, ‘Woman, behold your son!  Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold your mother!  And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home” (John 19:25-27).

Comments  ~  Imagine for a moment that your son is being executed.  How would you feel?  What would your emotions be?  Now, imagine you were Mary.  She had believed the angel that told her when she conceived that she would bear the Son of God.  Now she sees that same Son of hers receiving capital punishment as a common criminal.  The whole region was in chaos and her Son was the cause of it.

Don’t Miss This  ~  (1) Mary loved her Son at conception, at birth, and even more at His death.  She could not understand it all—but she could love.  (2) Mary, like all humans, needed forgiveness and the salvation that only comes from Jesus Christ—The Messiah.  (3) At the end of His life, while dying an excruciatingly painful death, Christ was concerned about the practical needs of His mother.  Apparently none of His brothers were there and so Jesus asked the Apostle John to care for His mother.

the key question: “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). This is the most important question you will ever answer. If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!
