Conscience, 26

~ Realize You Cannot Always Trust Your Conscience ~

Series Note ~ The conscience plays a crucial role in human behavior.  The Scripture has much to say about our conscience.  In posts 1—20 of this series, we looked at various descriptions of conscience.  In posts 21—25 we looked at the Big Four emotional factors that have a very negative impact on our consciences.  Finally starting with post 26 we look at a few of the dangers to the conscience.

Scripture ~ “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful.  All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.  Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them.  Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.  And God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.

“Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?  Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot?  Certainly not!  Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her?  For ‘the two,’ He says, ‘shall become one flesh.’  But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

“Flee sexual immorality.  Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.  Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?  For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:12-20).

Additional Scripture ~ “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.  No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthian 10:12-13).

Comment ~  Often the person who thinks they are strongest is the person most likely to stumble.  That is why the Scripture warns “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”

Q. If you can’t always trust your conscience then what can you trust?

A. The Word of God.  If things don’t align with God’s Word avoid the action!

Question ~ Are you complacent?  Are you feeling secure?  If so, be extra careful.
