God Attribute, 43

 ~ God Is Holy ~

This Series  ~  This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Introduction  ~  A key concept to keep in mind is that the word “holy” in Scripture contains a significant emphasis on unique as opposed to common.  You find this concept many times in the Old Testament when the holy is compared to the profane (common).

Here is one example: “Her priests have violated My law, and have profaned Mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from My sabbaths, and I am profaned among them” (Ezekiel 22:26 kjv).

Scripture  ~  “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.  Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.  And one cried to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory’!” (Isaiah 6:1-3).

Comment  ~  Some have suggested that perhaps the word holy repeated three times may represent the Trinity.  Whether it does or not, we know from the entirety of Scripture that all three members are holy!

Responsibility  ~  “Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy’” (1 Peter 1:13-16).
