5 Cups

~ Which of These Biblical Cups Do You Possess? ~

Sinner’s Cup  ~  The Lord tests the righteous, but the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates. Upon the wicked He will rain coals; fire and brimstone and a burning wind shall be the portion of their cup” (Psalm 11:5-6). This is the Cup of Judgment!

Savior’s Cup  ~  “Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom’” (Matthew 26:27-29). This is the Cup of Suffering!

Gospel Cup  ~  “What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me? I will take up the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord now in the presence of all His people” (Psalm 116:12-12). This is the Cup of Salvation!

Believer’s Cup  ~  “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:5-6). This is the Cup of Blessing!

The Christ Rejecter’s Cup  ~  Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, ‘If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name’” (Revelation 14:9-11). This is the Cup of Wrath!

4 Needs

~ 4 Problems + One Solution = Many Results ~

The fifth chapter of the Book of Romans clearly shows how the death of the Son of Man completely satisfies four problems of mankind—and there is no other remedy! With the solution comes many results. (All quotes below are from the New King James Version.)

The Problems (Romans 5)

1. “Without Strength”  ~  For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly” (v. 6).

2.  “Ungodly”  ~  For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly” (v. 6).

3.  “Sinners”  ~  But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (v. 8). “Through one man [Adam] sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned” (v. 12).

4.  “Enemies”  ~  When we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life” (v. 10).

The Only Solution (Romans 5)

1.  God’s Part  ~  Christ died for the ungodly” (v. 6). Christ died for us” (v. 8).

2.  Our Part  ~  “Having been justified by faith” (v. 1). “We have access by faith into this grace in which we stand” (v. 2).

The Results (Romans 5)

Peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (v. 1).

Grace in which we stand” (v. 2).

“We rejoice” (v. 2).

“God demonstrates His own love toward us” (v. 8).

“Having now been justified by His blood” (v.9).

Saved from wrath through Him” (v.9).

“We were reconciled” (v. 10).

Saved by His life” (v. 10).

“We also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (v. 11).

“Received the reconciliation” (v. 11).

“The free gift” (v. 15).

“The grace of God” (v. 15).

“The grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ” (v. 15).

“And the gift” (v. 16).

“The free gift” (v. 16).

Justification” (v. 16).

“Abundance of grace” (v. 17).

“The gift of righteousness” (v. 17).

Made righteous” (v. 19).

Grace abounded” (v. 20).

Grace” (v. 21).

Eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (v. 21).

conclusion:  Those who have experienced the realities of this chapter can say with the Apostle Paul in this same Roman letter, “O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:24-25).

3 Critical Questions

~ 3 Differing Responses ~

What Have I Done?  ~  The Lord told me to say to his people, ‘When someone falls down, doesn't he get back up? If someone misses the road, doesn't he turn back? Why then, my people, do you turn away from me without ever turning back? You cling to your idols and refuse to return to me. I listened carefully, but you did not speak the truth. Not one of you has been sorry for his wickedness; not one of you has asked, “What have I done wrong?” Everyone keeps on going his own way, like a horse rushing into battle. Even storks know when it is time to return; doves, swallows, and thrushes know when it is time to migrate. But, my people, you do not know the laws by which I rule you. How can you say that you are wise and that you know my laws? Look, the laws have been changed by dishonest scribes. Your wise men are put to shame; they are confused and trapped. They have rejected my words; what wisdom do they have now? So I will give their fields to new owners and their wives to other men. Everyone, great and small, tries to make money dishonestly. Even prophets and priests cheat the people. They act as if my people's wounds were only scratches. 'All is well,' they say, when all is not well. My people, were you ashamed because you did these disgusting things? No, you were not ashamed at all; you don't even know how to blush! And so you will fall as others have fallen; when I punish you, that will be the end of you. I, the Lord, have spoken’” (Jeremiah 8:4-12 Today’s English Version). The sad thing about this Biblical account is that the question, “What have I done wrong?” was asked by a careless sinner—one who had an incorrect response.

What Must I Do?  ~  But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed. And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, ‘Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.’ Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. And he brought them out and said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ So they said, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.’ Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household” (Acts 16:25-34). In this case an inquiring and anxious sinner is the one who asks the question. After hearing the answer he responded correctly.

What Shall I Do?  ~  Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, ‘Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?’ For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy. While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, ‘Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.’ But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. The governor answered and said to them, ‘Which of the two do you want me to release to you?’ They said, ‘Barabbas!’ Pilate said to them, ‘What shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?’ They all said to him, ‘Let Him be crucified!’ Then the governor said, ‘Why, what evil has He done?’ But they cried out all the more, saying, ‘Let Him be crucified!’ When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, ‘I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it.’ And all the people answered and said, ‘His blood be on us and on our children.’” (Matthew 27:15-25). In this case we have the easily persuaded or undecided sinner. As in many situations, the lack of a clear decision is a wrong response.

The bottom-line:  With regard to life’s critical questions, have you answered incorrectly, correctly, or are you still undecided?

2 Seekers

~ What Are You Seeking In Your Life? ~

God—The Son—Seeks Sinners  ~  “Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, ‘Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.’  And Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost’” (Luke 19:8-10).

God—The Father—Seeks Worshippers  ~  Jesus said to her [the woman at the Samaritan well], ‘Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father.  You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.  But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.  God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth’” (John 4:21-24).

What About You?  ~  “And the Lord said, ‘My Spirit shall not strive with man forever” (Genesis 6:3a).  Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.  Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon” (Isaiah 55:6-7).
