Jesus Is…, 21

~ Jesus Christ Is The Light of the World ~

Passages  ~  “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world.  He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life’” (John 8:12).

“Jesus answered, ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.  I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.  As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world’” (John 9:3-5).

Significance  ~  “Then Jesus cried out and said, ‘He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me.  And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.  I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness’” (John 12:44-46).

“And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.  And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.  So he came by the Spirit into the temple.  And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: ‘Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel’” (Luke 2:25-32).

the key question:  “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15).  This is the most important question you will ever answer.  If you do not answer it, or answer it incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!

Fact Check, 39

~ Christians Shouldn’t Associate with Non-Christians ~

People Think  ~  If you become a Christian you should cutoff your friendships and association with those of different beliefs.

God Answers  ~  “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’  Amen” (Matthew 28:18-20).

Jesus also said, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

The early Christian church understood this.  The Apostle Paul wrote: “For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak.  I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.  Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you” (1 Corinthians 9:19-23).

The Significance  ~  Jesus Christ was and is our example.  He regularly associated with all kinds of individuals—including those who were considered the worst of the worst.  “But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, ‘Jesus has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner’” (Luke 19:7).

Comments  ~  (1) It is true you should not remain in an unhealthy relationship—whether the other(s) in the relationship are believers or non-believers.  (2) These selected passages are only a portion of what the Scriptures have to say on this topic.  This post is not intended (nor do the Scriptures) to say our only involvement with non-believers is for witnessing about God and evangelizing them.

Learn From Gideon, 3

~ God Answers the Sincere Cries of His People ~

The Biblical account of the life of Gideon provides for one of the most interesting character studies in all of Scripture.  In this series we will discover practical lessons for living the Christian life today.

Scripture  ~  And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried out to the Lord because of the Midianites, that the Lord sent a prophet to the children of Israel, who said to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God of Israel: “I brought you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of bondage; and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you and gave you their land.  Also I said to you, ‘I am the Lord your God; do not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.’  But you have not obeyed My voice”’” (Judges 6:7-10).

Learn From Gideon  ~  God is a good God!
  1. God always has His children’s best interest in mind.  “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11)…
  2. The only path to lasting happiness on earth is trust in God.  “…O Lord of hosts, happy is the man who trusts in You!” (Psalm 84:12).
concluding comment  ~  We learn about Gideon primarily from Judges 6-8, but also Isaiah 9:1-7, and Hebrews 11:1-3, 32-34.
