~ The Bible is Like Water—It Cleans, Refreshes, Thirst Quenching
and Life Sustaining ~
Bible Similes ~ The
Word of God likens itself to a number of practical items. “The Word is like…” In this series we will look at some of the
similes of the Bible which are presented clearly in the Bible itself.
Like Water
~ Water
cleans! “Husbands, love your wives, just
as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might
sanctify and cleanse her with the washing
of water by the Word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious
church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be
holy and without blemish” (Ephesian 5:25-27).
Living Water from the Living Word ~ Water is refreshing and nourishing.
“Jesus answered and said to
her [a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well], ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who
it is who says to you, “Give Me a drink,” you would have asked Him, and He
would have given you living water.’
The woman said to Him,
‘Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob, who
gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his
livestock?’
Jesus answered and said to
her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will
become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.’
The woman said to Him,
‘Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw;’” (John
4:10-15).
“And Jesus said to them … he
who believes in Me shall never thirst’” (John 6:35).
“On the last day, that
great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts,
let him come to Me and drink. He who
believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom
those believing in Him would
receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet
glorified” (John 7:37-39).
Additional Thought ~ “Brethren,
I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all
passed through the sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the
sea, all ate the same spiritual food, and
all drank the same spiritual drink. For
they drank of that spiritual Rock that
followed them, and that Rock was Christ.
But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were
scattered in the wilderness. Now these
things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil
things as they also lusted” (1 Corinthians 10:1-6).
Application ~ Physical
water is an absolute necessity for physical life. In fact the majority of bodies consist of
water. Spiritual water is just as
critical for spiritual life as physical water is for physical life.
