Jesus Christ Is Our Wisdom ~
Passage ~ “But
of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who
became for us wisdom from God — and righteousness and sanctification and
redemption — that, as it is written, ‘He who glories, let him glory in the
Lord’” (1 Corinthians 1:30-31).
Significance ~ The
Book of James contrasts the wisdom of this world with the “wisdom from God” noted above:
“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works
are done in the meekness of wisdom. But
if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie
against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual,
demonic. For where envy and
self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. …
[Note
the change at this point.]
… But the wisdom that is from above is
first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good
fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in
peace by those who make peace” (James 3:13-18).
Comment ~ “Wisdom
from God” is usually not flashy or flamboyant but rather a quiet grace. King Solomon put it this way: “Words of the
wise, spoken quietly, should be heard rather than the shout of a ruler of
fools” (Ecclesiastes 9:17). Wisdom from
God is straightforward, simple, loving, faithful, and most importantly
true. Godly wisdom always operates in love.
It is never spoken to please people, rather its aim is always towards
pleasing God. A vital truth to remember
is that God delights to give His wisdom to all who seek Him—regardless of your
abilities, your earthly status, or your past.
the key question:
“Who do you say that I am?”
(Matthew 16:15). This is the most
important question you will ever answer. If you do not answer it, or answer it
incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!
