~ God Punishes ~

This Series ~ This series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God.  Generally, we move in alphabetical order.

Introduction ~ First we must recognize that punishment from God can be temporary discipline or eternal torment. The important punishment for our consideration is that which lasts for eternity.

For Christians, there can be short-term discipline but there cannot be eternal punishment. For unbelievers they face an eternity of torment.

Scripture ~ “There is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13).

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

“The Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son [Jesus Christ]” (John 5:22).

“So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Jesus said to them, ‘Have you understood all these things’?” (Matthew 13:49-51).

“Go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched” (Mark 9:43b).

Unbelievers ~ “For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my Gospel” (Romans 2:12-16).

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels’ …  And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life" (Matthew 25:41,46).

Christians ~ “I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more” (Hebrews 8:12).

“For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:11-12).

Questions ~ Which future are you facing? Should you make a change?
