Light, 3of3

~ The Christian In Light ~

Consider three spiritual light basics.

Light Comes From Christ Through His Word  ~  “In the beginning was the Word [Jesus Christ], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He [Jesus Christ] was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.  In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.  And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it” (John 1:1-5).  “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, I am the light of the world.  He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life’” (John 8:12).

Just as with natural light is integral with life so also spiritual life and light are closely intertwined.

The Word Entering Gives Light and Life  ~  The light from the Word of God gives life.  “In Him [Jesus Christ] was life, and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4).  Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life” (John 5:24).  “The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.  He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:35-36).

Spiritual Light and Life Brings Liberty  ~  “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.  And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free’” (John 8:31-32).

Consider four aspects of light and the Christian.

Our Environment (we enter into light)  ~  “You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy” (1 Peter 2:9-10).

Our Enlightenment (we have light in us)  ~  “But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.  For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake.   For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:3-6).

Our Employment (we walk in light)  ~  For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:8-10).

Our Equipment (we are protected by our armor of light)  ~  “The night is far spent, the day is at hand.  Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light” (Romans 13:12).

Light, 2of3

~ The Christian As Light ~

A Candle Must Be Lighted To Be Useful  ~  “For You will light my lamp; the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness” (Psalm 18:28).

A Candle Should Be Positioned To Be Seen  ~  Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).

A Candles Wick Should Be Kept Burning  ~  Jesus said, “Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning” (Luke 12:35).  The Book of Proverbs speaking of the Godly woman says, “She perceives that her merchandise is good, and her lamp does not go out by night” (Proverbs 31:18).

A Good Candle Will Burn Brightly  ~  In commending John the Baptist Jesus Christ said, He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light” (John 5:35).  Speaking about the role of all His disciples Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

Light Is Needed For Finding Lost Items  ~  In the parable of the lost coin Jesus Christ said, “What woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it?” (Luke 15:8).

A Christians Light Should Never Go Out  ~  Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever” (Daniel 12:3).
