Myth, 55

~ God's Love Must Be Earned ~

Introduction  ~  This is the great divide in spiritual beliefs.  All religions are based on self-effort and earning your rights.  Religions are all based on what you DO.  Christianity on the other hand is a relationship with a living Savior through the indwelling of God’s Spirit within you.  Rather than based on what you do it is based entirely on what God has DONE through the sacrificial death of His Son Jesus Christ.

Scripture  ~  “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.  For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:4-10).

And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace.  But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work” (Romans 11:6).

Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace” (2 Timothy 1:9a).

Comment  ~  Grace has been defined many different ways, the most common being “unmerited favor.”  I like to think of it this way: Grace is getting something good which you do not deserve.

Fear God, 180

~ Cornelius, The Centurion Feared God ~

God does not want His children living in fear.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3).  However, God does want His children to have a proper respect and reverence for Him.  We are told in many places in Scripture to “fear God.”

This Week’s Passage  ~  “Then Peter went down to the men who had been sent to him from Cornelius, and said, ‘Yes, I am he whom you seek.  For what reason have you come?’  And they said, ‘Cornelius the centurion, a just man, one who fears God and has a good reputation among all the nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to summon you to his house, and to hear words from you.’  Then he invited them in and lodged them” (Acts 10:21-23).

Fearing God Results in Salvation  ~  It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).  A wise person fears and departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident” (Proverbs 14:16).  This does not mean the Christian is to live a fearful life—but a life which reverences God and seeks to do His will.

Fearing God Results in Fearlessness  ~  “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).  The answer is: only God.  With the gift of salvation comes responsibility.

Fearing God Results in Witnessing  ~  “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul” (Psalm 66:16).

6 Christian Activities

~ The Christian’s Interaction With Christ ~

The CHRISTian life is all about Christ. Consider some critically important Christian activities.

Walking With Him  ~  Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. (Luke 24:13-15). Walking with Him provides revelation!

Talking To Him  ~  Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah” (Luke 9:28-30). Talking with Him provides fellowship!

Listening To Him  ~  Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word” (Luke 10:38-39). Listening to Him provides instruction!

Abiding (Living) With Him  ~  “They said to Him, ‘Rabbi’ (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), ‘where are You staying?’ He [Jesus] said to them, ‘Come and see.’ They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour)” (John 1:38-39). Abiding with Him provides joy and peace!

Praying Through Him  ~  And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:31). Praying in His name provides power!

Watching For Him  ~  Jesus said, “For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:38-42). Watching for Him provides expectancy!

How are you doing?
Are your activities properly aligned with your Christian calling?
