Temptation, 6of13

~ Being Tempted is Not a Sin ~

Introduction  ~  Some Christians mistakenly believe that being tempted is a sin.  This false idea can cause misery and a defeated lifestyle.  Being tempted, either by enticement to sin or by testing from God, is meant to strengthen rather than defeat.  Temptation can lead to sin—by yielding to the temptation.  As a boy we used to sing a great old hymn of the faith, “Yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin.”

You Will Be Tempted  ~  Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.  Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.  But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.  Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death” (James 1:12-15).  As long as we live on earth we will be tempted—so be on guard!

Jesus Christ Was Tempted  ~  “We have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.  For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:14-15).
