~ God Is Gracious ~
This
Series ~ This
series of posts looks at some of the many attributes of God. Generally, we move in alphabetical order.
Scripture ~ “The
Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and great in mercy.
The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works” (Psalm
145:8-9).
“But
the Lord was gracious to them, had compassion on them, and regarded
them, because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not yet
destroy them or cast them from His presence” (2 Kings 13:23).
“So
rend your heart, and not your garments; return to the Lord your God, for He
is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness; and He
relents from doing harm” (Joel 2:13).
“For
the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching
us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly,
righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and
glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself
for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself
His own special people, zealous for good works” (Titus 2:11-14).
‘But
He gives more grace. Therefore He says: ‘God resists the proud, but gives
grace to the humble” (James 4:6).
“Gracious
is the Lord, and righteous; Yes, our God is merciful. The Lord preserves
the simple; I was brought low, and He saved me. Return to your rest, O my soul,
for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you” (Psalm 116:5-7).
‘Therefore
the Lord will wait, that He may be gracious to you; and therefore He
will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you. For the Lord is a God of
justice;
Blessed
are all those who wait for Him” (Isaiah 30:18).
Comment ~ There
are three terms in these verses which need to be differentiated.
Grace is receiving
something good which was not deserved.
Mercy is not
receiving something bad which was deserved.
Justice is getting
what you deserved.
