Servants of Christ, 5of5

~ 4 Key Traits of Effective Servants ~

To be acceptable in God’s eyes a servant must serve with the four following traits.

Serve Wholeheartedly (affections)  ~  “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?” (Deuteronomy 10:12-13).  Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Serve Willing (mind)   ~  As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts” (1 Chronicles 28:9a).  But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20:24).

Serve Humbly (attitudes)  ~  From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church.  And when they had come to him, he said to them: ‘You know, from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you, serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews; how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ’” (Acts 20:17-21).

Serve Joyfully (spirit)  ~  “Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!  Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing.  Know that the Lord, He is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture” (Psalm 100:1-3).

Servants of Christ, 4of5

~ 3 Key Types of Servants ~

There are three distinct types of God’s servants.

Wooing & Winning (evangelist)  ~  “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise” (Proverbs 11:30).

Watering & Watching (pastor)  ~  Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account.  Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you” (Hebrews 13:17).

Witnessing & Warning (teacher)  ~  To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.  Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.  To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily” (Colossians 1:27-29).

Summary  ~  “He Himself [Jesus Christ] gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers” (Ephesians 4:11).

Servants of Christ, 3of5

~ 3 Key Possessions of Servants ~

There are three things which the effective servant of God will grasp tightly.

Hold Tightly To Your Faith With A Good Conscience  ~  Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering (for he is faithful that promised)” (Hebrews 10:23).  This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck” (1 Timothy 1:18-19).

Hold Tightly To The Faithful Word  ~  For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled, holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict” (Titus 1:7-9).

Hold Tightly To The Word of Life  ~  Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain” (Philippians 2:14-16).

Summary  ~  These three possessions which we are to grasp firmly all have to do with correct doctrine.
