~ The Holy Spirit’s Work in the Life
of a Believer ~
Regenerating
~ “Jesus
answered, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the
Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, “You must
be born again.” The wind blows where it
wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and
where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit’” (John
3:5-8).
“But
when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by
works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved
us, through the washing of regeneration
and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly
through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we
should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life” (Titus 3:4-7).
Indwelling
~ Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep
My commandments. And I will pray the
Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you
forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither
sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to
you” (John 14:15-18).
“Therefore,
brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you
will die; but if by the Spirit you
put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage
again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out,
‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children
of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with
Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together” (Romans
8:12-17).
Outflowing
~ “On
the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If
anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom
those believing in Him would
receive; for the Holy Spirit was not
yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified” (John
7:37-39).
“Therefore
He who supplies the Spirit to you and
works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the
hearing of faith?—just as Abraham ‘believed God, and it was accounted to him
for righteousness’” (Galatians 3:5-6).
