~ Clear Absolute Statements—Straightforward Words: “Eternal” ~
The doctrine of “eternal
security” (sometimes described as “once saved—always saved”) is widely accepted
with Christianity. There are however
some who deny this important teaching of Scripture—by pulling verses out of
their context to make them say something other than intended. In this series we look at what the Word of
God has to say about the subject. “Him
who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the
presence of His glory with exceeding joy” (Jude 24).
What is your definition of “eternal” / “everlasting”?
Jesus said, “For God so
loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in
Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John
3:16).
“And this is the
testimony: that God has given us eternal
life, and this life is in His
Son. He who has the Son has life; he who
does not have the Son of God does not have life. These things I have written to you who
believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal
life, and
that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God” (1 John
5:11-13).
Jesus Christ said, “My
sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I
give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone
snatch them out of My hand. My Father,
who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch
them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father
are One” (John 10:27-30).
“I know that whatever God
does, it shall be forever. Nothing can be
added to it, and nothing taken from it. God does it, that men should fear before Him”
(Ecclesiastes 3:14).
“Jesus spoke these words,
lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: ‘Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may
glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should
give eternal
life to as many as You have given Him.
And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and
Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:1-3).
Jesus said, “Most
assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life” (John
6:47)
