God and Your Temptations ~
Overview ~
The trials, tests, and tribulations which you experience are overseen by
God Himself. Absolutely nothing takes
God by surprise!
Diverse
Temptations (various kinds) ~ “Brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials” (James 1:2). “In this you
greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been
grieved by various trials” (1
Peter 1:6).
Origin
of Temptation (various
sources) ~ “Let no one say
when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives
birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death” (James
1:13-15). “For,
in fact, we told you before when we were with you that we would suffer
tribulation, just as it happened, and you know.
For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your
faith, lest by some means the tempter
[Satan] had tempted you, and our labor might be in vain” (1
Thessalonians 3:4-5).
Value
of Temptation (various
purposes) ~ “In this you
greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been
grieved by various trials, that the
genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that
perishes, though it is tested by fire, may
be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1
Peter 1:6-7). “Be
sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring
lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist
him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced
by your brotherhood in the world. But may
the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect,
establish, strengthen, and settle you.
To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 5:8-11).
Power
for Victory (God Himself) ~ “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he
fall. No temptation has overtaken you
except such as is common to man; but God
is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but
with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able
to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:12-13). “The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and
to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment” (2 Peter 2:9).
Results
of Temptation (various
rewards) ~ “Blessed [happy] is the man who endures
temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of
life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him” (James
1:12).
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall
into various trials, knowing that the
testing of your faith produces patience.
But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of
God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to
him. But let him ask in faith, with no
doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the
wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;
he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” (James
1:2-8).
“In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a
little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being
much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory
at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:6-7).
The
Ultimate Reward ~ “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has
been approved, he will receive the crown
of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him” (James
1:12).
