~ New Commandment ~
Introduction ~ This
series will aid us in understanding some of the many dimensions of possessing new
life through the work of Jesus Christ found in the New Testament (or New
Covenant). The theme for this series is from the book of Lamentations where we
find a great summary verse about our gracious and faithful God.
New
Mercies
~ “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail
not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. ‘The Lord
is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘Therefore I hope in Him!’” (Lamentations
3:22-24).
Scripture ~ “So, when
he had gone out, Jesus said, ‘Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is
glorified in Him. If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in
Himself, and glorify Him immediately. Little children, I shall be with you a
little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, “Where I am
going, you cannot come,” so now I say to you. A new commandment I give
to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one
another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for
one another’” (John 13:31-35).
“Brethren,
I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had
from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the
beginning. Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true
in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is
already shining” (1 John 2:7-8).
“I
rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as
we received commandment from the Father. And now I plead with you, lady, not
as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from
the beginning: that we love one another. This is love, that we walk according
to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the
beginning, you should walk in it” (2 John 4-6).
Comment ~ Consider
this important related passage: “But the end of all things is at hand;
therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. And above all things have
fervent love for one another, for ‘love will cover a multitude of sins’” (1
Peter 4:7-8).
