~ Jesus Christ Sees the Heart and
Honors Reality ~
General Comment
~ When Jesus saw there was always an appropriate reaction and in each case
we can learn from the event.
Today’s Scripture
~ “And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow
putting in two mites. So He said, ‘Truly
I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out
of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she
had’” (Luke 21:1-4).
“Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two
mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and
said to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more
than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their
abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole
livelihood’” (Mark 12:41-44).
Application ~ God
honors reality—but hates falsehood—especially in regard to spiritual
things. Jesus said, “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before
men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you
have no reward from your Father in heaven.
Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before
you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may
have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to
you, they have their reward. But when
you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand
is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees
in secret will Himself reward you openly.
And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the
synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by
men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have
their reward. But you, when you pray, go
into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in
the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. And
when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for
their many words. Therefore do not be
like them. For your Father knows the
things you have need of before you ask Him” (Matthew
6:1-8).
The
23rd chapter of Matthew’s Gospel is instructive in this regard. It quotes Jesus using the phrase “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites!” seven times (verses 13-29).
