~ Don’t Rest During War ~
The Biblical
account of the life of Gideon provides for one of the most interesting
character studies in all of Scripture.
In this series we will discover practical lessons for living the
Christian life today.
Scripture ~ “And the leaders of
Succoth said, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we
should give bread to your army?’ So Gideon said, ‘For this cause, when the Lord has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna
into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and
with briers!’ Then he went up from there
to Penuel and spoke to them in the same way.
And the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had
answered. So he also spoke to the men of
Penuel, saying, ‘When I come back in peace, I will tear down this tower!’ Now Zebah and
Zalmunna were at Karkor, and their armies with them, about 15,000, all who were
left of all the army of the people of the East; for 120,000 men who drew the
sword had fallen” (Judges 8:6-10).
Learn From Gideon
~ There is a real temptation to
take it easy following a major victory.
- Gideon resisted the natural desire to rest.
- We cannot rest after a victorious battle while the war is still raging!
- Satan often comes on the strongest following your spiritual victories.
“Put on the
whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the
devil. For we do not wrestle against
flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers
of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the
heavenly places. Therefore take up the
whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and
having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:11-13).
“Be sober, be
vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion,
seeking whom he may devour. Resist him,
steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by
your brotherhood in the world. But may
the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after
you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever
and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 5:8-11).
concluding comment ~ We
learn about Gideon primarily from Judges 6-8, but also Isaiah 9:1-7, and
Hebrews 11:1-3, 32-34.
