“Ideal for devotional reading or for personal or small group study ... this book will find a worthy spot among my study materials ...  I thoroughly enjoyed the book.  Aside from the fresh look at the Pearl of Great Value parable, I especially enjoyed the addendum addressing the gifts brought by Magi to a young Christ Jesus.”  ~ Benjamin Potter

The Myth  ~  Numerical quantity is what is important to God.  Mankind tends to measure success by numbers—the more the merrier.  It does feel great (pride) to have large numbers of followers.  God is not impressed by outward appearance.

Even Jesus Christ, while on earth in human form, was not particularly attractive.  “For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground.  He has no form or comeliness; and when we see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him.  He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.  And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him” (Isaiah 53:2-3).

Relevant Scripture  ~  God is interested in the inner man, not the outward appearance. “‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ says the Lord.  ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Biblical Example  ~  There are many Biblical examples to show that numerical superiority is not what God covets.  One prime example is the story of Gideon (Judges 6-8).  Gideon started out with 32,000 men, but God reduced Gideon’s to a mere 300 men of His choosing (Judges 7:2-8).  Since God was in it victory followed.  Notice, that God used less than 1% of Gideon’s army to achieve victory!
