~ The Title “Jehovah-Nissi” ~
Jesus
said, “I and My Father are one” (John 10:30).
There are quite
a number of Jehovah titles. This series
will focus on seven Jehovah titles which embrace the fullness of Jesus Christ
for His people. These titles include the
completeness of Jehovah’s name as it is manifested in the life of Jesus Christ
for His people. These titles show how
the Messiah completely meets His people’s need from their guilt to their future
glory.
Jehovah-Nissi means “the Lord our banner,” or “the Lord
my banner.” In this context a banner can
be thought of as an insignia, ensign, signal pole, a standard, or commemorative
plaque.
“Then
the Lord said to Moses, ‘Write
this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I
will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.’ And Moses built an altar and called its name,
The-Lord-Is-My-Banner; for he said, ‘Because the Lord has sworn: the Lord will have war with Amalek from
generation to generation’” (Exodus 17:14-16).
Circumstances ~ It was following a
military victory over the Amalekites at Rephidim that Moses built a memorial to
honor the event. In our day our warfare
is not with flesh and blood but with the world, the flesh, and the devil (1
John 2:16-17). It is the Cross of
Calvary which is our banner today—it signifies God’s power over sin and death,
and the ability to redeem the lost sinner.
“And
as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man
be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His
only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have
everlasting life” (John 3:14-16).
the key question:
“Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). This is the most important
question you will ever answer. If you do not answer it, or answer it
incorrectly, you have made the biggest mistake anyone can make!
